Job Description – Senior Practitioner/SENCo

Reports to: Lead Practitioner/Manager
Hours: See contract
Work Base: Millfield Pre-School
Annual Leave: School holidays only


• To deputise and support the Lead Practitioner/Manager.
• To undertake full responsibility of the SENCo role.
• To attend SEND cluster meetings.
• To assess, prepare and write support plans for relevant children.
• To submit application for termly SEND funding (if required).
• To support and advise parents/carers and liaise with other outside professionals.
• EHCP (Education, Health, Care plan) preparation and submission (as advised).
• Attend/Lead FSP meeting when required.
• To provide 1:1 support if and when required.
• To provide a stimulating and varied programme of play.
• To ensure the safety and well-being of the children is maintained to a high standard at all times.
• To work with the team to ensure all legal and regulatory requirements are met.
• To assist with the general hygiene of the setting at the beginning, end and during the session.
• To attend and contribute to planning, staff meetings and prepare nominated activities.
• To be able to communicate on all levels effectively with parents/carers regarding a range of situations e.g. personal relationships, housing and financial.
• To carry out regular Health and Safety checks.
• Attend Committee meetings, Leaders and Manager meetings with Lead Practitioner/Manager.
• To take into account the views and opinions expressed by others when discussing the needs of the Pre-School to ensure the smooth running of the setting.
• To be available for senior staff meetings once a week.
• Prepare for and attend Child Protection Conferences when required.


• To maintain confidentiality at all times.
• To be the Deputy Safeguarding Lead Practitioner.
• To help create an environment that is stimulating and inviting for every child.

• To provide for each child's needs and stages of development.
• To observe, assess and record children's development in line with Millfield Pre-School's procedures.
• To be aware of all aspects of safety and security in relation to children attending Millfield Pre-School and ensure the Pre-School's procedures are followed.
• To be a good role model to staff and children in upholding the Pre-School values and rules.
• To ensure all children's dietary needs are met.
• To be an active member of the Pre-School team and guide staff when necessary.
• To observe and meet the welfare requirements set by Ofsted.
• To follow and promote all Policies and Procedures of Millfield Pre-school.
• To promote the good reputation of Millfield Pre-School and contribute to its development within the community.
• To act as mentor for students and volunteers where necessary.

Skills and Knowledge

Good interpersonal skills.
Able to accurately assess and record a child's development.
Ability to provide age appropriate activities.
Have an understanding of child development.
Awareness of the Children's Act 2017.
Understand the EYFS (2012).


Essential: NVQ 3 Children's Care, Learning & Development or equivalent.
Current statutory Paediatric First Aid, Child Protection and Step-on.
Setting SENCo Training


Essential: At least 2 years experience at Level 3 working in a childcare setting.
Working experience of the SENCo role.
Experience of working within a team.
Know and have worked with the Early Years Foundation Stage.
Have recorded and assessed children's development.

Desirable: Knowledge of cultural beliefs and British Values.
Have worked with parents/carers.
